Is it a sin to be cremated? While this may seem like a random or odd question, it’s actually one I hear regularly as a pastor. After losing a loved one, some Christians begin to wrestle with whether or not it is sinful to have their body cremated versus having a bodily burial.
I actually grew up around a tradition of Christianity that frowned on cremation, but when you talk to people who assist families in making decisions concerning death, they will tell you that statistically, more and more people are choosing cremation. According to the National Funeral Directors Association's 2025 Cremation & Burial Report, the 2025 cremation rate was projected to be 63.4% and the burial rate 31.6%. And by 2045, the cremation rate is expected to reach 82.3%.
Where do I land on all of this?
First of all, I think it's important for us to clarify that this is not a question about what is or is not sinful. There are three reasons why I believe it is wrong to tell someone or conclude that it is a sin to be cremated:
1 - It places too much emphasis on the flesh. Scripture indicates over and over that our flesh is going to pass away. Whether someone's body is buried or cremated, eventually the elements of this world will break it down.
2 - We do not have any biblical passage in the New Testament where God chose to inspire an author to outline the proper way to be buried, which tells us this is not really a priority for God in our lives.
3 - It does not take into account people who die in terrible situations. For example, if you decide that it's a sin to be cremated, what about someone who dies a terrible death in a fiery car accident or a soldier whose life and entire body is lost from an explosion on a battlefield?
All of these reasons keep me from assigning cremation the label of “sinful.”
However, I would add that I do think it is a wonderful witness for a Christian’s body to be buried. I am going to be buried bodily because it is my last opportunity to communicate to the world about a coming resurrection. Throughout the Bible, God's people treated the bodies of their deceased loved ones respectfully because they believed in a resurrection. I want my loved ones to see my vessel lying there in state, knowing that one day it will be resurrected and glorified.
“It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.” 1 Corinthians 15:42-44
So, is it a sin to be cremated? Absolutely not. But I do think that many Christians have followed a tradition of giving glory and honor to God and the resurrection by having a bodily burial.
